For decades most gents watches were a tiny 33mm across. That was back when men worked with heavy machinery so it was good to have a slim little watch that could be tucked under a protective glove, or a cuff if you were an office wallah.
Then in the 60s it kinda went larger to 35mm, then 37mm for stuff like Valjoux chronographs. The watch trade often called them oversize cases. Fast forward to the early 21st century and you wore 40mm or maybe a 43mm wide watch on your wrist to make a statement. But now smaller, 36-38mm watches are making a comeback.
Partly, it’s because manufacturers want to appease any gender warriors out there online who might start screaming “You’re not making trans-friendly watches, you fascists!” But it does also offer ladies who prefer a slightly larger watch the chance to buy one, rather than the sub-33mm stuff they have been fobbed off with for decades.
In the end, a 36mm case is just another consumer choice and let’s say Amen to that freedom and move on.
The latest C63 additions from Christopher Ward are limited editions, so we guess the UK brand is testing the water a little bit here. Bright colours in red, green, yellow and blue – we like the Tiffany blue best, although Christopher Ward call it Lucerne Blue. OK, no bother, we know the score. Priced from just under 700 quid they have auto movements, sapphire crystals and see-thru casebacks. Here’s the word;
Four ultra-fresh coloured dials for autumn – limited to just 200 pieces each. A 36mm case that’s perfect for those of any gender who want to be up with the trend of smaller case sizes. And a Swiss automatic movement that’ll be with you every step of the way. Plus, each watch comes with a free leather strap – matched perfectly with the dial’s colour, so you can make a serious statement that can’t be ignored. And thanks to its quick-release system, swapping it for a bracelet is easy, too. Now available in a shorter length, suitable for slimmer wrists.
Inspired by the colours of Swiss topography and English flora, the 36mm is available in four shades: Lucerne Blue, Jura Green, New Forest Yellow, and Acer Red. And as a bonus, each watch comes with a free leather strap that exactly matches the dial. Whether you’re a lover of Swiss watchmaking or someone you know is looking for a powerful statement accessory, you’ll find everything you need here.
As with the 39mm Sealander Automatic, the polished lacquer dial plays host to top-brushed, diamond-polished indexes filled with Super-LumiNova® Grade X1 BL C1 for visibility in low light. But here, you’ll also find the new twin-flags logo – contrasting with those pop-out colours and delivering a visual hit you’ll never tire of.
The hand-set is also filled with lume, while the date window at 6 o’clock provides extra information and adds visual symmetry. And if you like changing the character of your watch, you’ll appreciate our quick-release straps and bracelets.
