Oris are of course renowned for their dive watches, but the new Pro Pilot X models premiered at Watches and Wonders this week offer a a laid back, almost hippy look.
With dials in grey, pale blue and a pale orange, they are kinda restrained dress watches, but maybe that understated look is a good thing. It doesn’t shout status symbol and sometimes that can be nice.
Another feature is the see-thru caseback and movement, with its sculpted rotor featuring two cut-out sections, plus an Oris shield logo. Those big jewels are also a nice, reassuringly robust touch, as is the matching fluted edging on the caseback, which echoes the bezel on the front.
Case diameter is 39mm by the way, very close to the new standard of 38mm for dress watches.
CAL 400 OFFERS TEN YEAR SERVICE INTERVALS
“Inside the ProPilot X Calibre 400 is one of our new generation of high-performance automatics. Conceived entirely in-house by our skilled engineers, Calibre 400 Series movements all feature elevated levels of anti-magnetism, a five-day power reserve and a 10-year warranty. We call this The New Standard.” Says Oris and we have to admit, a five day reserve is impressive and it’s thanks to twin mainspring barrels inside the compact movement.
The watch comes with a standard 2 year warranty, which can be extended to a ten year warranty, which is twice the usual length from most Swiss makers. They have thought about longevity here, which is arguably a greener strategy than simply adding ocean waste straps to watches – make the product itself last a lifetime.
There is a silicon escape wheel and anchor, plus a slide bearing system, rather than a ball bearing, to help the rotor glide every which way. Service intervals are ten years apart.
Price is £3300 and there’s more at the Oris site.
