Fossil Batman: Catnip For Collectors

You have to admit that the Batman franchise has been one of the most successful movie and merchandising rackets of the last 35 years or so. Fossil has now added its take on the moody Dark Knight movie series, with this automatic watch and we have to admit, it looks pretty good.

This is the whole enchilada when it comes to collectable/fanboi watches. Special box; check. Special compass on the wristband; check. Special bat logo front and back; check.

You get the picture, this is like the Dinky toys of old, the action figures of the original Star Wars trilogy, or the Swatch themed collections of the past. Complete the collection, encase it on shelving in the man cave and wait for values to rise.

But we say, it’s actually an OK watch to feed the budding interest of younger collectors. Yep, it makes a nice first watch, especially an automatic. This is a perfect birthday gift and also something that can be used and enjoyed. Grown men should not wear comic book watches OK? It’s for the under 18s.

You get an auto movement ( Seiko NH35), spare straps, see-thru caseback and it’s quite meaty at 43mm across. We love the green/black dial combo best. Here’s the full spec;

Case Size: 43 mm
Movement: Automatic
Platform: BATMAN LE
Strap Material: Silicone
Water Resistance: 10 ATM
Case Material: Stainless Steel
Case Color: Black
Dial Colour: Black
Strap Fashion Colour: Black
Interchangeable Compatibility: 22 mm
Strap Width: 22 mm
More here at Fossil UK and it retails at £279, which seems steep for a fashion/movie merch watch, but there y’go. When you scour the net, you realise it isn’t that cheeky.
Alternative Batman watches include the Undone Caped Crusader, which is £305, or the huge 52mm Invicta Batman edition, in yellow and black colours. That costs £366, in their current Sale, which only proves our original point; this merchandising racket can be very lucrative.
